CARE Counseling has partnered with Shannon Goecke-Watson, PsyD, LP, to provide an overview on identifying and understanding domestic violence in the therapeutic context. Dr. Goecke-Watson will discuss how many people who experience domestic violence (DV) do not realize that unhealthy behaviors they endure from their partners are DV. Many individuals, including mental health professionals, to whom acts of DV are disclosed cannot properly identify the unhealthy behaviors as DV or do not know how to respond if they do identify the behaviors as DV. This creates missed opportunities to intervene and help clients who may need support, safety planning, and/or resources. As such, the purpose of this training is to learn how to better identify acts of domestic violence, to learn helpful and helpful ways to respond when DV disclosure is made, and to learn myths and facts about DV that can help inform behavioral health treatment decisions.
