PILT Training: Substance Use Disorders & Recovery | 4 CE Credits

Throughout this series, CARE Counseling will be presenting on diagnostic considerations, conceptualization, and assessment for substance use disorders; biopsychosocial and cultural considerations when working with substance use and recovery; as well as substance use informed approaches and evidence-based interventions to apply in psychotherapy practice.  

CARE Psychotherapy Training Videos are intended solely for educational purposes for mental health professionals. Viewers are expected to treat confidential material found herein according to professional guidelines. Unauthorized viewing is prohibited. 

Level of programming is introductory: assumes minimal familiarity with the topic.

This training is designed to help attendees 

First hour:  

  • Describe two+ main diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders.​​ 
  • Acquire two+ new ways to gather diagnostic information through interview questions and assessments.​ 

Second hour:  

  • Identify one+ biological and one+ psychological consideration for substance use and recovery. 
  • Identify one+ social, environment and cultural consideration for substance use and recovery  

Third hour: 

  • Describe two+ evidence-based approaches to working with substance use concerns and recovery.​ 
  • Apply three+ evidence-based interventions for substance use and recovery. 

Fourth hour: 

  • Describe one+ way “the self as therapist” influences work with substance use & recovery concerns.  
  •  List one person and one family centered treatment goal for work with substance use concerns or recovery    
  •  Identify two+ ethical and legal considerations when working with substance use related concerns. 

The presentation is designated for psychologists and mental health professionals (LP, LPC/LPCC, MFT/LMFT, LGSW/LICSW, LADC), pre-licensed mental health practitioners, and students.

About the Presenters:  

Heidi Bausch-Ryan, Psy.D. LP, is a psychologist and the Vice President of Training at CARE Counseling. Heidi has studied the experiences of grief and losses associated with substance use and recovery, for the individual, family members, and significant others. She has received additional training in the area of substance use disorders, as well as delivered professional training presentations on grief, depression, anxiety, trauma, co-occurring concerns, recovery pathways, and resiliency. Prior to graduating with a doctoral degree, Dr. Bausch-Ryan worked in residential substance use treatment and on an in-patient dual diagnosis unit, serving adolescents to young adults with mental health and substance use concerns. Her clinical interests include grief, substance use and recovery, life transitions, identity explorations, and building resilience. 

 

Hannah Dufek, MS, LADC, LPCC, is a mental health professional and the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Specialist at CARE Counseling. Prior to working in outpatient mental health, Hannah worked in higher education as a career and academic advisor and participated in leading panels and discussions regarding DEI initiatives at the university. She has additional professional experience working at an intensive residential treatment facility as well as community mental health work supporting refugees and immigrants. Hannah has studied the experiences of marginalized groups in therapy and has training in assessing and treating substance use and recovery in individual and group settings. Her clinical interests include identity exploration and intersections, substance use concerns and recovery, relational work, and trauma. 

Alice Liu Xia, LADC, LPCC, is a dual licensed mental health professional Specialist at CARE Counseling. Alice received her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a focus in Alcohol and Other Drug Addictions at the University of Wisconsin, Stout. She is also certified in Accelerated Resolution Therapy. She has clinical experience in working with individuals who utilize substances to cope and those that have made the decision to choose a life of recovery from addiction. She also has experience working with adolescents and adults in various areas of life transitions, changes and challenges.

 

Guest Speakers:  

David Adair, LADC, LPCC, is a dual licensed mental health professional Specialist at CARE Counseling. David received his Master’s degree in Integrated Behavioral Health from the University of Minnesota. He has over two years of clinical experience working with substance use concerns and recovery at an Intensive Outpatient substance use treatment center, prior to working in outpatient mental health. 

Bridget Sova, PhD is a post-doctoral fellow at CARE Counseling. She received her Master’s degree in counseling psychology from the University of St. Thomas and her doctoral degree in counseling psychology from Auburn University. She has experience in working in a variety of substance use settings that vary in acuity level and populations including intensive outpatient with residential housing with adults and outpatient settings with college students. She completed her Master’s practicum at Park Avenue Center in Minneapolis, and has continued to work with individuals with substance use on an individual basis ever since. Her research combines binge drinking culture among college students with bystander intervention programming for sexual violence to improve safety on university campuses.

Substance Use Disorders & Recovery

CARE Counseling is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. CARE maintains responsibility for this program and its content. Clinicians will need to attend the full training hour to receive CE credit(s).  Clinicians can choose to attend one, two, three sessions, or four in this training series.  

To receive 1 CE credit(s): Clinicians will need to attend the full training hour and obtain a passing post test score (max of 3 attempts allotted).  CARE maintains attendance records of all continuing education event attendees for a period of at least three years.
