Grand Rounds: Emotion Focused Couples Therapy: The Basic Concepts to Know & Practice | 1 CE Credit

CARE Counseling has partnered with Gerald Schwanke, LMFT, to provide an overview on Emotion-Focused Couple Therapy (EFT). EFT is an attachment, experiential based approach to supporting couples, individuals, and therapists walk through difficult relationship issues, stressors, traumatic experiences. The attachment approach in EFT keeps the individual, couple and therapist focused on the emotions and attachment longings that are created in stressful and conflicted situations. By using therapist’s validation and present moment, in session experiences the couple begin to experience emotional bonding that is aimed at satisfying the attachment longings with the desired result of deepening connection in the relationship. In this brief presentation, attendees will learn the various research approaches used in EFT, the history and development of EFT and 5 techniques that have been found helpful to support couples and therapists engage in present moment experiences that lead to more lasting changes and relationship satisfaction.

Level of programming is introductory: assumes minimal familiarity with the topic. 

This Grand Rounds is designed to help participants: 

1. Name various research approaches used in EFT. 
2. Describe five EFT techniques, along with their history and development. 
3. Post-presentation, practice and utilize evidenced-based present moment exercises in the therapy process. 

The presentation is designated for CARE Counseling mental health professionals (LP, LPC/LPCC, MFT/LMFT, LGSW/LICSW, LADC), pre-licensed mental health practitioners, and students.

CARE Counseling is also approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. CARE maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

About the Presenter: 

Gerald Schwanke, LMFT is a Level II trained Emotion Focused therapist at PrairieCare in Chaska.  Gerald has been a Lutheran pastor for over 35 years and has been counseling individuals, couples, and family in the parish, and now professionally since 2010.  Gerald has been involved in the Minnesota Emotion Focus Community since 2008. 

The speaker has indicated no conflicts of interest. There was no commercial support for this training.

Emotion Focused Couples Therapy | 1 CE Credit

CARE Counseling is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. CARE maintains responsibility for this program and its content. It is the responsibility of each learner to verify that continuing education earned at CARE or elsewhere meets the requirements for their State and individual license.

To receive 1 CE credit(s): Clinicians will need to attend the full training hour and obtain a passing post test score (max of 3 attempts allotted).  CARE maintains attendance records of all continuing education event attendees for a period of at least three years.
