Neurodiversity: When Disability & Identity Intersect | 1 CE Credit

CARE Counseling has partnered with Megan Helmen, Psy.D., L.P. for this training on neurodiversity. To grow up thinking, “There is something wrong with me” is painful and impedes development. Unfortunately, children with developmental disabilities, such as autism and AD/HD, are described as having a set of deficits and symptoms in the medical model. Educationally, they have to make inadequate progress or have impaired functioning before formal support can be accessed. The good news is that through a shift in perspective and knowledge about developmental needs in these children, we can provide support for them now. Doing so will support their mental health, identity development, and ability to access their education similarly to their non-disabled peers.

The CARE Grand Rounds is intended to help attendees:

  • Identify traits versus symptoms
  • Defend ND-affirming approaches based on ethical principles
  • Describe ways to support heathy identity development

The presentation is designated for psychologists and mental health professionals (LP, LPC/LPCC, MFT/LMFT, LGSW/LICSW, LADC), pre-licensed mental health practitioners, and students.

About the Presenter:

Dr. Megan Helmen opened Developmental Discoveries Neuropsychology in 2022. Dr. Helmen became specialized in autism and pediatric neuropsychology during her clinical internship and postdoctoral fellowship. After 10+ years of providing evaluations for children, she wanted to make a clinical process into a more meaningful experience for children and families. Her practice incorporates the child and humanizes the evaluation process in order to optimize outcomes.

*The speaker has indicated one conflict of interest, naming of place of work during the presentation; however, there was no commercial support for this training.
