Prolonged Grief Disorder | 1 CE Credit

CARE Counseling has partnered with Fiyyaz Karim, Psy.D., resident faculty member in the Master of Professional Studies in Integrated Behavioral Health and Master of Professional Studies in Addictions Counseling Programs at the University of Minnesota. Fiyyaz specializes in grief, loss, and trauma, with an emphasis on disenfranchised losses. They will share various measures to assist with grief and loss as well as unpack the components of the new Prolonged Grief Disorder in the DSM-V-TR. 

CARE Psychotherapy Training Videos are intended solely for educational purposes for mental health professionals. Viewers are expected to treat confidential material found herein according to professional guidelines. Unauthorized viewing is prohibited. 

 Level of programming is introductory: assumes minimal familiarity with the topic. 

This Grand Rounds is designed to help participants:

  • Explore the historical context and define prolonged grief disorder (PGD).
  • Identify key diagnostic criteria for PGD.
  • Name one implication for practice.
  • Explore other assessment tools to assist with grief and loss

The presentation is designated for psychologists and mental health professionals (LP, LPC/LPCC, MFT/LMFT, LGSW/LICSW, LADC), pre-licensed mental health practitioners, and students.

About the Presenter: 

Fiyyaz Karim is a resident faculty member in the Master of Professional Studies in Integrated Behavioral Health and Addictions Counseling programs at the University of Minnesota. Prior to working in higher education, Dr. Karim was employed in community mental health outpatient settings, many addressing the needs of marginalized communities. His clinical interests include grief and loss, social justice issues, health psychology, and trauma. Fiyyaz currently serves as a community consultant and has conducted professional training sessions and workshops on diversity, equity, and inclusivity (DEI) areas including microaggressions, implicit biases, cultural appropriation, and identity development. Dr. Karim has done clinical work and research in grief and loss, with a focus on disenfranchised losses such as unemployment, divorce (or relationship losses), chronic illness, addictions, and more recently losses with the pandemic. *The speaker has indicated no conflict of interest and there was no commercial support for this training.

CARE Counseling is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education. CARE maintains responsibility for this program and its content. It is the responsibility of each learner to verify that continuing education earned at CARE or elsewhere meets the requirements for their State and individual license. 

To receive 1 CE credit(s): Clinicians will need to attend the full training hour and obtain a passing post test score (max of 3 attempts allotted).  CARE maintains attendance records of all continuing education event attendees for a period of at least three years.
