Direct Electrical/Magnetic Brain Stimulation for Mood Disorders | 1 CE Credit

CARE Counseling has partnered with Translational NeuroEngineering Laboratory to provide an overview on deep brain stimulation (DBS) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) approaches for mood disorders. Joining us will be Alik Widge, MD, PhD, psychiatrist, biomedical engineer, and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Minnesota, who will speak on the connections and communication between brain regions involved in mental health related concerns. The presentation will include a review on methods to modify circuits involved in depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and anxiety. 

CARE Psychotherapy Training Videos are intended solely for educational purposes for mental health professionals. Viewers are expected to treat confidential material found herein according to professional guidelines. Unauthorized viewing is prohibited. 

Level of programming is introductory: assumes minimal familiarity with the topic.

3. Describe the evidence-based approach of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). 
 
The presentation is designated for psychologists and mental health professionals (LP, LPC/LPCC, MFT/LMFT, LGSW/LICSW, LADC), pre-licensed mental health practitioners, and students.

About the Presenter:

 Alik Widge, MD, PhD is a psychiatrist and biomedical engineer. Clinically, he provides brain stimulation treatments for mood, anxiety, and substance disorders. His research focuses on developing these treatments further, particularly the creation of new "closed loop" devices. His laboratory (TNE Lab) prototypes new stimulation paradigms and targets in rodent models, conducts clinical trials of these new technologies, and searches for biomarkers of illness and recovery to guide next-generation therapies.

It is the responsibility of each learner to verify that continuing education earned at CARE or elsewhere meets the requirements for their State and individual license.  

 To receive 1 CE credit(s): Clinicians will need to attend the full training hour and obtain a passing post test score (max of 3 attempts allotted).  CARE maintains attendance records of all continuing education event attendees for a period of at least three years.
